Tuesday Tuneup- #16
Happy Tuesday everyone!
I love seeing polls on Linkedin, but unfortunately there never seems to be any sharing of the results…. lame! It’s like there’s some great secret sauce that nobody wants to share the recipe to…Let’s change that!
A couple weeks ago I did a poll on Linkedin asking people to pick a stance regarding work/life balance that they most aligned with.
The choices where.
Make $60k a year - Working in you spare time- with no set hours
Make $90k a year- Working just 3 Days a week- with set hours
Make $150k a year- Working 5 Days a week-with set hours
Make $250k a year- Always on 24/7
My goal was to answer a couple questions
How do people in my network value their time vs their income potential?
How do we value the importance of fixed hours?
Are there any patterns that emerged surrounding job titles?
Worth clarifying that Linkedin only allows four options and a limited amount of characters in these polls. I tried to fit in what I could while still trying to grasp an overall concept.
Here’s how the data broke down. For obvious reasons I’m not sharing individual answers.
75% of respondents did NOT pick the most money. Other priorities were more important.
71% of people also voted for fixed hours in place of flexibility.
Of all the sales people that answered the poll, only 12% opted for the most money and almost all craved a 5 day work week with set hours. (Very surprising to me)
Over 60% of those at a Director level of higher selected the 24/7 option. It comes with the territory!
50% of all managers voted for a 3 day work week for less money (Most of any group)
Only 20% of managers wanted to be on the clock 24/7. The rest would take less money to have a 3 or 5 day work week with set hours.
So…. what are my take aways from all this?
1- We MUST make sure that we are having conversations with our teams about what their goals are AND that we as leaders are supporting those goals.
2-Money is not as big of a driver as we often assume it is. Boundaries was much more important to most. Food for thought when we are bothering people on their nights and weekends.
3- Just because somebody is in sales, doesn’t mean that they care solely about money. Most want to show up, make a good living, go home and enjoy life.
4- If you want to be in a Director role or higher, it's probably going to come at the cost of balance.
Thank you everyone who participated in the poll! I found the data fascinating and I hope you all have as well. What did I miss? What would you like to see asked? How do you look at this data?
Until next Tuesday… Have a great week!
